Vapours by Islands (ALBUM REVIEW)

Released in 2009 on Anti. Islands are an experimental pop / rock band from Montreal, Quebec. They formed in 2005. Two of the founding members were also in a band called the Unicorns. This is their 3rd album. Islands is good again ! Maybe it's because founding member, Jamie Thompson, is back in the fold. At any rate, Islands is back in the swing of writing user friendly yet still unconventional pop songs. Vapours is a very focused album. Very cohesive. Where "Return To The Sea" was kind of scatterbrained and "Arm's Way" was overly ambitious, Vapours is tight and on point. No experimental hip hop tracks here. All the songs share a similar feel. They all have a splash of electro in them, in the form of synths or some vocoder or even drum programming. Vapours isn't their most varied album, but the songs do stand alone quite well, deal with different moods and definitely have their own structure personalities. This album also maintains all of Islands trademarks. To Nick Diamonds voice, to the somewhat dark subject matter, to the light hearted delivery, the degree of silliness and, at times, tenderness. Lots of catchy melodies, endearing vocals, songs that are well written but don't take themselves too seriously. I'm happy Islands are back to writing decent pop songs again. None of this is reinventing the wheel. Nothing here will blow any minds, but it will set some minds at ease.
